Scientific Payload for an Interstellar Probe Mission

چکیده
NASA’s Interstellar Probe Mission will be the first spacecraft specifically designed to explore the outer solar system, pass through the boundaries of the heliosphere, and sample the nearby interstellar medium. During the spring of 1999, NASA’s Interstellar Probe Science and Technology Definition Team* developed a concept for a mission that will travel to 200400 AU using solar-sail propulsion. The principal scientific goals would be to explore the outer solar system, explore the structure of the heliosphere and its interaction with the interstellar medium, and explore the nature of the interstellar medium itself. These studies would be carried out by a ~150 kg spacecraft carrying a scientific payload designed to make comprehensive measurements of heliospheric and interstellar plasma, fields, energetic particles, neutral gas, and dust. We discuss the scientific goals and strawman payload for this mission.

Second generation EmDrive propulsion applied to SSTO launcher and interstellar probe
In an IAC13 paper the dynamic operation of a second generation superconducting EmDrive thruster was described. A mathematical model was developed and, in this paper, that model is used to extend the performance envelope of the technology. Three engine designs are evaluated. One is used as a lift engine for a launch vehicle, another as an orbital engine for the launcher and a third as the main e...
متن کاملProject Icarus: Preliminary Thoughts on the Selection of Probes and Instruments for an Icarus-style Interstellar Mission
The Project Icarus study [1, 2] is tasked with designing an interstellar space vehicle capable of making in situ scientific investigations of a nearby star and its accompanying planetary system. This paper presents an initial consideration the range of probes and scientific instruments that will be required in order for Project Icarus to fulfill its scientific mission. It is important to realiz...
متن کاملThe Science with the Interstellar Heliopause Probe
After the exciting in-situ observations of the termination shock and the entry of the Voyager 1 spacecraft in the heliosheath, there is a growing awareness of the significance of the physics of the outer heliosphere. Its understanding helps to clarify the structure of our immediate interstellar neighbourhood, contributes to the clarification of fundamental astrophysical processes like the accel...
متن کاملThe Warm Spitzer Mission: Opportunities to Study Galactic Structure and the Interstellar Medium
The Spitzer Space Telescope Warm Mission capability, specifically broadband IRAC imaging at 3.6 and 4.5μm, provides a unique opportunity to probe the content and structure of the Milky Way’s disk, particularly along lines of sight that suffer significant interstellar obscuration. This white paper examines the factors that favor and constrain the application of a warm Spitzer to Galactic structu...
متن کاملFOCAL mission to 550 thru 1000 AU : Status review 2009
This paper presents a 2009 status review of the ‘‘FOCAL’’ space mission studied by this author and others since 1992 and formally proposed to ESA for consideration after the year 2000. The FOCAL probe is intended to reach distances between 550 and 1000AU to exploit the huge radio magnification provided there by the gravitational lens of the Sun, as predicted by the general theory of relativity....
